A good cook changes his knife once a year — because he cuts. A mediocre cook changes his knife once a month — because he hacks.
– Zhuangzi
The surgeon cuts only when she must, and therefore her blade is sharp and her cuts precise, knowing what she is aiming for before her blade pierces the skin. You, on the other hand, you hack. You slash and burn and worse yet, you know what is about to happen before the carnage begins.
Moreover, consider this: Why does the surgeon cut? Does he cut to cut or does he cut to remove the tumor? How much was the bill last month? The mortgage doesn’t pay itself does it?
You talk of carelessness. Your mouth may speak of careless hands yet here I stand with the scalpel to cut away the tumor that poisons your mind. You will receive none of the information that you demand. I seek seclusion. You seek the comfort of others. I will not give you the answers. Everything you wanted to know was always right there in front of you. Everything you block out, that you dissociate from. Everything you cannot hear when you are talking. Noisy people cannot hear beyond the chatterings of their own mind. Perhaps the ancient texts would have an answer more fitting.
Seeking the Chuang Tzu an old Taoist text older than time, I can say this:
Go to the woods. Sit in silence. Meditate. Do not leave this place for three months. Now leave me and leave this place.
